Free, compulsory secular education from teh age of five, with the opportunity to go to university at the age of 18, also free or almost without cost has been the cornerstone of New Zealand society for many years.
This may be changing and Hamilton Boy's High where I went to school for three years from 1969-71 now charges huge fees. When I went there the major cost was that of the school uniform.

Anne Merrilyn Tolley (born March 1, 1953 in Napier, New Zealand) is a politician representing the New Zealand National Party. With the formation of the Fifth National Government in late 2008, she became the Minister of Education, the first woman ever to assume the role.
